Nasivikoso Village is located in the mountainous interior of Fiji's main island. Students and staff of Rustic Pathways who have spent time in this community over the last 15 years often find it hard to leave and few ever forget the incredible experience they had during their time with the villagers here.

We are working to build an elementary school for the children of Nasivikoso and to create a leading educational institution in this remote and often neglected region of the country.

There are more than 100 elementary age children in Nasivikoso but to be in the village during the school week you would not know it. Even young first graders must spend the school week away from their parents living in a crowded dormitory in order to get an education. During the rainy season roads can become impassable and students often miss class while they wait for the weather to clear. The village needs an elementary school of its own and education facilities to open doors for their children's future. We are working with village elders to make this a reality and we need your support.

Project Details:

The elementary school will develop over several years to include four classrooms, a library, teachers living quarters, and bathrooms as well as desks, chairs, blackboards, sports field and other items needed to get the school running. To start, each classroom will provide a learning space for two grades that will share one teacher.

Stage One construction got underway in November 2011 and will include two classrooms and a toilet block for the entire facility. Stage Two will include construction of housing for the teachers assigned by the Ministry of Education to work at the school. Stage Three will continue construction of the final two classrooms. Additional developments are expected to continue over several years.

Members of the village have been elected to the School Committee and will manage the school when it opens. The Ministry of Education has confirmed they will provide a teachers as the classrooms are completed, with the understanding that new grade will start each year at the school. We can’t wait for the first classes to start!
